I am a high school now senrior, AP Spanish, had an ass load of problems in this regard. I learned that way. Imperfect is used when a scene is set. Like when I was young, or I, or Tuesday. Basically describe an image. Could you describe the people in it and what they did, John was walking his dog, we got hit by a car. In spansih, would be imperfect. It describes, he had never thought of something, and stops the action of the reality in the past sentence describes something that happened in a framework specific time rather than in the past and the action has already been achieved. Rather than said John was walking his dog when he was hit by a car. It would, John walking his dog and was hit by a car. Ex 1 ate my dinner (last time) (completed action) Commission dinner. I ate my dinner (when something happened) / I ate dinner (imperfect) ate dinner. Complcated I know, but I hope I could help
