Television programs for free and ratings
The brutal truth: all the TV shows for free in the world (including new promotions, sporting events and prices, in fact, all the shows there) have their existence depends on one factor valuable – votes.
What are the ratings? Why not exercise such power?
Fundamentally, evaluations are just one audience measurement system used by television and advertising. Through a survey, which measures the size and other details of the television audience.
In turn, these results serve as a guide for advertisers to place their ads to reach as many people at the lowest cost and all other relevant statistics. The survey results may indicate the existence or death no thanks for a television program.
The reliability of these ratings are able to how many are watching a particular TV program for free? The data is correct and verifiable? The results really reflect the true nature of the television audience?
Nielsen
The activity audience measurement has been developed for radio by Nielsen Media Research, founded by Arthur Nielsen. In 1950, the company moved to television. Over the years, his method became the standard worldwide television audience measurement.
The methods of collecting scores are performed in two ways:
1) Viewer "logs" folder or see or hear the habits of the target audience who self-registered. Demographic data are diverse, so a good statistical distribution of the hearing.
2) Adjust the counters are small devices the size of land classification that connect to television in selected homes. These meters record the viewing habits of the owner, and sends the data every night over the telephone line.
The meters also measure the viewing habits of users to the exact moment when channels are changed or when the device is on or off. The People Meters added also produced other useful information that appears on the user.
Go to time, Nielsen also began to measure the use of recordings digital video (like TiVo) for people that his favorite record shows for later viewing. Initial results show that changed time shown does not change ratings.
Data
Nielsen results with both measures, scores and share point.
In September 2008, is 114.5 million households in the U.S. The only national rating is 1% of that number, or 1.145 million families.
Share is the number of television opened during the investigation. If Nielsen reported a show like 10/25 have a number, this means that 10% of households are watching the program (no vote) while only 25% of all television stations were opened during this period (of action).
Notes: The percentage of total television connected to the issue. Share is the share of a reality show open and in use. Each year, Nielsen re-estimates the number of households with televisions in the preparation of each research season.
Over the years, the advertising industry has made certain demographic classifications. Viewers 18-49 age group are considered more important than the total number of viewers. Other products specify a younger audience, and others prefer a more public age, or women as appropriate.
Comments
There was criticism of the methods used by Nielsen ratings. The first is the bias in the responses of research participants. The accounts are sometimes higher in the self newspapers collected by electronic meters.
Another major criticism is that these surveys are not truly random. Only a small part of population and only those who accept are used as size sample.
Other criticisms include the lack of TV audience measurement in large environments of television programs such as dormitories, transport terminals, bars and other public places. Also, the growing number of Internet users were not counted.
For its part, Nielsen has committed to introduce new ways to measure television audiences and shown to include these non-traditional sites. New, sophisticated measuring devices used in the next days especially those that are independent of human intervention.
For fans without television everywhere, to make these assessments matter? Or is it a problem if your favorite show is canceled for the alleged lack of spectators? Stay tuned for more information on this topic.
