Math of TV?
a) find the size of a television screen that has a 20 inch diagonal. height the screen is 2 inches shorter than the width. b) a television 56 inches diagonally. the screen is 10 inches wider than the screen dimensions high.find. I appreciate your answers! Thanks!
a) Is the screen height is h and width w. So we know h = w-2, but the length is 20 inches diagonal, then by Pythagoras, h ^ 2 + w ^ 2 = 20 ^ 2 h = w 2 "But, then becomes (W-2) ^ 2 + w ^ 2 = 20 ^ 2 ^ 2-4W w 4 + w ^ 2 = 20 ^ 2 ^ 2 W 2-4 W = -396 0 w = 13.1 "After the height, h = 11.1 cm. The screen has a height of 11.1 inches and a width of 13.1 inches. B) Let w be the width and height h. Then h = 10 w = w h-10 Now then, by Pythagoras, h ^ 2 + w ^ 2 = 56 ^ 2 = w-10 pm But then (^ W-10) ^ 2 + w 2 = 56 ^ 2 Solving for w gives w = 44.3 h = 34.3 Then the screen is 44.3 inches wide and 34.3 cm high.
