Distance education has provided generations of students the opportunity to pursue their educational goals outside the traditional school system. It has allowed many students the opportunity to continue their studies, while allowing them to maintain their obligations to their families and employers. Although distance learning is not for everyone, it certainly has stood the test of time. The following is a brief chronology of events related to distance education.
â € ¢ 1840 â € "Isaac Pitman begins teaching shorthand by correspondence in the United Kingdom.
â € ¢ â € 1858 "The University of London established its External Programme.
â € ¢ 1883 â € "New York State authorizes the Instituto Chautauqua to issue degrees obtained through correspondence.
â € ¢ 1891 â € "The School of Mines coal mine engineer spent renamed the International Correspondence Schools.
â € ¢ 1892 â € "began at the University of Chicago University administration undergraduate in the mail.
â € ¢ 1906 â € "The Calvert School of Baltimore becomes the first U.S. school to offer primary correspondence courses.
â € ¢ 1916 â € "The National University Continuing Education Association was established in the States USA.
â € ¢ 1921 â € "Pennsylvania State College courses begins broadcasting on the radio.
â € ¢ 1933 â € "The University of Iowa begins broadcasting courses on television.
â € ¢ â € 1950 "The Ford Foundation begins provide grants to create and develop educational programs for television.
â € ¢ 1967 â € "The Corporation for Dissemination Service was created.
â € ¢ 1970 â € "Walden University is established.
â € ¢ 1974 â € "California State University offers a master's degree by correspondence.
â € ¢ 1982 â € "The National University Teleconferencing network is established.
â € ¢ 1984 â € "The personal computer is named" Man of the Year "by Time magazine.
With the advent of personal computer and Internet development, distance education has become a very important part of modern education. Most of all universities North America offering online courses, while a boat of any formed around the concept of online education. There are online courses available for many members of the public. The beauty of online education is no borders, and prospective students around the world now have access to opportunities. Elearning has the ability to make the world a better place. In some respects, it already has.
