During the 1950s and 1960s were a familiar landmark western on television. It reached the zenith of its popularity, 1959, when 29 West TV broadcasting in prime time, and eight of the ten best shows of the West. The West's most successful period of the train's carriages were (9 seasons), Death Valley Days (12 seasons) Bonanza (14 seasons) and Gunsmoke. Running for 20 seasons, becoming the oldest Gunsmoke TV Western ever made. In the mid-1960s, however, the history of traditional Western TV Cowtown, farmers and men Bill had reached its saturation point. Even the production of solid with a cast of stars, like the Great Valley (1961-1965), who introduced Barbara Stanwyck, Lee majors, Linda Evans, Peter Breck, was struggling to carve their own niche.
Westerns remained popular on TV until the end of 1970. The new programs ventured beyond the issues basic cowboys and Indians, ranchers, cattle towns and shooters and began to explore more true to life or single frame. The Wild, Wild West (1965-1969) was a the first of them with its history of secret service in the Wild West. Alias Smith and Jones was formed in 1971 and follows the adventures of a pair of con artists. Kung Fu (1972 – 1975), a western martial art with a religious theme, follows the adventures of a Shaolin priest Caine (David Carradine) in the Wild West. The House on the Prairie, a family-oriented Western produced and directed by the famous Bonanza, Michael Landon, began in 1974 and worked for nine years until it was completed in 1983. However, with the exception of House on the Prairie, TV westerns these days just about the level of success of the classic westerns such as Death Valley Days, Bonanza and Gunsmoke.
Although interest in westerns went down in the 1980s and 1990s, Western television series and made for television mini-series is further developed. Young Riders (1989-1992) tells the story of a group of Pony Express riders. Often featured guest stars, including some of the original stars of classic television West of the 60s. Without doubt the best western ever made for television and probably one of the best westerns of all time, six hours and half-mini series based on the novel by Pulitzer Prize the same name, tells the story of two former Texas Rangers who are cattle from Texas to Montana. Lonesome Dove won seven Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for best film. Three films were made for surveillance, as well as two television series: Lonesome Dove: The Series (1994) and Lonesome Dove: Outlaw Years (1996). More recently, the acclaimed HBO Western criticism, Deadwood (2004-2006), has surprised with his hard to talk about realistic portrait of life in the thriving city of gold, 1880 Deadwood, Dakota del Norte.
