Television: teacher, disruptive, or tool??
I do not know about you, but the TV is on in my house much more than want. Before resorting to throw it out the window, I decided to do some research to see if the TV is as bad as I've said. Although there are some glimmers of hope, research indicates that most of what is on television is worse than neutral. Most television programs affect our children.
Television is a tool. If we use it wisely, can be taught to and entertain. There are excellent shows like Sesame Street, Blues Clues shows, discovery, history, entertainment, like cooking. When the appropriate age, television can expand the horizons of our children. But most television is limited to our children. The following is a summary of the research and, above all, ideas, things that we as parents can do to minimize and mitigate damage. Note that the provisions below apply to computer use, music videos, DVD's, etc.
The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry says that television can be a powerful influence in developing value systems and shaping behavior. Most of us are aware that Sesame Street teaches children that are ready for it, letters and numbers. Mr. Rogers teaches pro-social values. But many of us forget that the same way, the program teaches all our children some TV. And when you look closely at what most programs are teaching our children, can be quite disturbing. Research on children's behavior, poor school performance, weight, sleep patterns, brain development and to safeguard the claim that television affect our children.
Violent behavior – Thousands of studies have investigated whether there is a link between exposure to media violence and violent behavior. Over 98% yes. Proof of the research is overwhelming. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, "Studies depth indicate that media violence can contribute to aggressive behavior, desensitization to violence, nightmares and fear of damage. "Children become immune to the horror of violence gradually accept violence as a means of solving problems, imitate the violence they see on television, and identify with the characters (The victims or perpetrators) they see on television.
Research has shown that most children spend hours watching TV, more likely to display aggressive and hostile impulses. This effect has been deemed applicable whether the conduct is performed by a man or a television cartoon character. Y aggressive impulses have been found to occur with many girls as boys, adolescents and adults and children.
Many parents think that since they have grown with cartoons turned violent and property, their children. But studies have shown that the amount Violence has increased dramatically and the type of violence has changed. It is now more widespread, more sinister, and most shockingly realistic.
And the effect is sustainable. Watching television at the age of four was considered a factor associated with bullying in primary school.
Other behaviors – Children who watch more television are starting to smoke at an early age. Listen Television has been a major influence on how to start smoking than smokers and parental smoking peers.
Exposure alcoholic beverages to consumers on television and in music videos (and MTV) is a risk factor for increased consumption among adolescents. Exposure to sexual content increases the likelihood that children become sexually active earlier in life.
Academic achievement – Research has much to say on television and school performance. Watching TV may replace activities that we know to improve school effectiveness, such as reading, doing homework, looking for hobbies and get enough sleep. effects of television in education are long-term – positive and negative. Studies have found the following:
Children who watched educational television exclusively to preschool education have higher grades, less aggressive, and placed more value than those academics who have seen all sorts of television.
Children who watched television just before the age of three years was significantly better in math and reading at age six.
Watching television as a child with academic performance in 26 years. Looking childhood television are more likely to drop out and reducing the chances of getting a college degree, even after control for confounding factors.
Children who watched a lot of violent TV at age 5 ½, defined as cartoons and films suitable for all age groups, had the lowest average score in English, mathematics and science in high school. Each hours a day to see 5-15 children was associated with a probability of 30% to obtain a diploma college, even with the IQ and educational level of parents consider.
Children under 2 ½ who watched Sesame Street (the version designed for 3-5 years) showed a slower rate of language acquisition than those who did not. programs such as Power Rangers and Teletubbies slow development in children vocabulary, reading and math.
Weight – television is a factor of childhood obesity. Studies have shown that the more television view, is more likely that a child is overweight. Having a TV in a child increases the chances of obesity room even more. The most-watched television child more weight, serum cholesterol, lack of exercise and the risk of smoking among adults. Girls who watch too much TV have a higher risk of developing eating disorders.
Sleep / – relax watching TV leads to sleep problems, especially if one just before bedtime. Many of us have the idea that television is relaxing. I know I did. And we're seeing, relaxing, despite having not as relaxing as reading a book. But studies show that a person is less relaxed after the TV is off than they were before continuing. And they are less relaxed than those have completed a physical activity or an activity like reading or playing quieter cards.
Brain development – research on early brain development and television course. Numerous studies link early television viewing to attention problems later as ADHD. Other experts disagree with these results. However, most researchers agree with the American Academy of Pediatrics argument that children 2 years of age should not have time to screen. older should be limited to 1-2 hours per day of non violence, Children's educational programs.
So what should parents do? How can we help our children develop positive listening habits television? How can we teach our children to watch TV as a treat or special activities – especially when you can not watch TV so we? How can help mitigate the negative effects of television in a world inundated by television? Many of the suggestions following the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Observer – How do our kids watch TV after else? Are they more violent? Are they more likely to have nightmares? Do these behaviors decreased when reducing or eliminating the television for a period of time? Or when we eliminate some programs? Short term are easy to see – the long-term effects are much more confusing.
Listen – What are our children saying after consulting different sample? What seems to feel? Ask them what you think they are saying or feeling. This may help to clarify his thoughts and feelings. You know what happened? Very often, children lack the plot at all, or from a different perspective of adults anticipate. It is easier to deal with the feelings and perceptions of children in the calm, in fact, after really listening to what they are.
Ask questions and listen a little more – Questions can help our children to think about what they saw, to address and clarify values. Questions, adjusted for age, might be: Are they crazy characters, sad, afraid? Who could be hurt? How do you think they feel now? Hurt someone if they do in real life? (Often children, especially those under 8 can not distinguish between fantasy and reality.) What if you tried? What safety equipment do you think is there, but not shown? (Children older sometimes imitate the behavior that appears in "reality shows"). Have things break anyone? Who will solve this problem? Why do you think the character hurt others? What could be done without harming anyone? What would you do if you were that character? Is this the look abnormally thin? How many people actually see in real life?
Listen and trade – Is there a moral history and your children there? Is there no moral of the story or else the consequences and our kids believe they can get away with unacceptable behavior because their favorite character no? Tie the history of your family's values. Studies show that in areas where a child does not know his point of view of parents and has little knowledge or experience to serve as guidelines, television can have a major influence beliefs, attitudes and behaviors. Emphasize that although the actor has not actually been injured or killed, such violence in real life results in pain or death. For older children and adolescents, the use controversial programming as a crossing point of departure for initiate discussions about family values, violence, sex and sexuality and drugs. Reinforce positive behavior and positive nutritional messages seen on television. Present solutions to violence.
Ad Challenge applications – really make you happier, more popular, more sexy. Explain the purpose of advertising is.
Recognize that children need to feel older and current with the latest TV show. This is not allowed to see the sample do not feel comfortable, which means for him to know that you realize your wishes.
Reduce or eliminate screen time – watching TV Discourage Children under two years, and encourage more interactive activities that promote proper brain development, such just talk, play, singing and reading together. Note the TV time – young children watching programs of their brothers and sisters watch elderly parents. It is correct that some programs are for adults only. It might be new – that can be traumatic for children, contests, reality shows.
Limit screen time total (video TV, computer games) to a maximum of 1-2 hours of quality programming per day. Again, monitoring is essential. The V-chip is a regulated industry, and very loose interpretation. Often, programs for education, not really. Elimination or reduction of night school sends TV the message that school is more important than television.
Monitor – Monitor shows for children and teenagers see it. Most programs should be informative, educational and nonviolent. Choose shows that are engaged in interesting and stimulating content, rather than flashy graphics and sound. Sure programs that are age and developmentally appropriate. Their children the attention and interaction with the program? Otherwise, it may be too complicated or too easy.
If you do not put a TV in the bedroom of her son, do not. If you already have a TV, consider removal. Studies show that children with a TV in the room to see more than an hour of television per day than children who do not. And it's much more difficult / impossible to control and review the content if the TV program is in the room.
Refuse to let children see shows known to be violent. Change the channel or turn the TV off lights when the offending material. Be sure to explain why. If you choose to show a violent with their children, stress the belief that violence is not the best way to solve a problem.
Minimize scary stuff, especially programs that glamorize or sexual violence – even (especially?) For preteens and teens. If you choose to see violence, sure there are real consequences.
Talk to other parents – Even though you can control viewing at home, unless the screen is in a bedroom, you can not control what has access to other homes unless they are in contact and consultation with parents. Aid rules Similar to reduce peer pressure.
Map of watching TV – Are you in control of television – or his control of television family life? Does TV Bring your family together or separately? How does your child watch television? His proposal of television watched with friends in the nursery, in her bedroom, once they are asleep, look at what the family member is watching? What is the content and quality programs your children watch? What part of what they see? Is television in the background when one eye on television and the other to try to maintain a conversation? Are you bored or intentionally zap choose a program? "Is this the outcome you desire? Most parents do not know the answers or not really thought about these issues. Keep a TV show in a couple of weeks to help answer these questions and help you begin to conscious vision. Aware display includes the treatment of television as a tool is aware and use it to help their children, not harm them.
Use the VCR correctly to view or save high-quality educational programs for children.
Consider going at once – Studies of families living without television for a period of time to find that after symptoms initial abstinence – and saw the anxiety, depression and aggression for first three days – has found that after two weeks, families have been adapted and is replaced TV time with other activities. Families trying new things. They found some interesting alternatives. Most television added to his life, but made in a limited number more discreet, more thinking.
role model – If you want your children watch TV, fully aware have to lead by example.
Provide alternatives – When your child says I am boring, it becomes your problem? Or is it an incentive for child to be creative? Are the available raw materials for creativity?
Even educational television is no substitute for active play. Children have to spend much time in active play. They need an active communication, talking and listening to peers and adults, especially parents.
Encourage alternative entertainment for children, including reading, athletics, recreation and creative play.
What are the things we can do together? Can you make dinner together? His son is in the kitchen with pots and pans while you get dinner? What activities are available that can do together? Can you play board games or cards, as well as (if the change rules of the younger children have the opportunity)? Often, newspapers or websites lists of cheap or free activities you can do with the family.
Make your children part of the planning process. They can come with all sorts of fun things you might not expect. And it will be more invested in the process of listening with more attention to television. His family could make a pot of trouble. When your children say they are bored, they learn to drink from the bottle to do. It can be fun or it can be a chore. The fact that this could encourage them to be difficult to find their own solutions to boredom.
And no, he threw the TV out the window, but we try to be more aware of the spectators.
